Kiani grew up in Rawalpindi. Their mother, Khawar Kiani, enrolled the children at the Pakistan National Council of Arts’ Children Art Workshop, where music became an early part of their lives. As a young performer, Kiani travelled to international children’s festivals and later hosted the children’s music show Angan Angan Taray.
Finding their sound.
Playback singing for Sargam in 1995 and the debut album Raaz helped introduce Kiani to a wider audience. Roshni brought the defining songs Dupatta and Boohey Barian. Their work later moved through the English-language collaboration Rough Cut with Aamir Zaki and the folk project WAJD, made with brother Irfan Kiani.
A new chapter on television.
In 2021, Kiani made their acting debut as Sakina in Raqeeb Se. They followed it with Dobara, playing Mehru opposite Bilal Abbas Khan, then Pinjra and Hadsa. Kiani has said the move into drama began when music performances stopped during the pandemic and Momina Duraid called with an opportunity.
Showing up for communities.
After Pakistan’s 2022 floods, Kiani launched Vaseela-e-Raah to support affected families. By the time of their BBC 100 Women recognition in December 2024, the initiative had reported building 370 homes and other facilities. Music and relief work both remain part of their public life.
