How it started
Born in Philadelphia, Steve studied cinematography at Penn State and worked for a newspaper for two years before travelling to India with his camera. In Pakistan he met Afghan refugees who helped him cross into Afghanistan as the Soviet invasion was closing the country to Western journalists.
A face remembered
His photographs from Afghanistan helped bring the conflict to wider attention. In 1984, he photographed Afghan refugee Sharbat Gula in Pakistan; her portrait appeared on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic. He and a National Geographic team found her again in 2002.
Beyond the cover
His work ranges from conflict and cultural traditions to everyday life. He also founded ImagineAsia, which supports educational opportunities for children in Afghanistan and beyond.
