Mini bio

How it started.

Abida grew up in Larkana in a family of singers and musicians. Her first teacher was her father, Ustad Ghulam Haider. In a 2022 interview, she recalled accompanying him to shrines to recite kalaams and sing at festivals.

Finding her audience.

Radio Pakistan Hyderabad became an early platform for her in the 1970s. She later trained with Ustad Salamat Ali Khan of the Sham Chaurasia Gharana, while her husband, Ghulam Hussain Sheikh, helped mentor her career.

Poetry at the centre.

Her repertoire draws on poets including Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Sachal Sarmast, Bulleh Shah, Amir Khusrau and Kabir. Kafis, a solo form accompanied by instruments such as harmonium and percussion, sit alongside ghazals in her work.

New listeners, shared songs.

Coke Studio collaborations introduced more listeners to her voice: Chaap Tilak with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Aaqa with Ali Sethi, and Tu Jhoom with Naseebo Lal. She continues to appear in live concerts and on recordings, including Shehzad Roy’s Zindagi.
