Mini bio

How it started.

Joe grew up in Windsor, Ontario, and found his way into bushcraft through online forums and mentors. In his 2026 Diaries of a Lodge Owner interview, he credited Terry Barney, known as Iowa Woodsman, as a major teacher. His early YouTube uploads were short demonstrations of outdoor skills.

Finding his format.

Joe recalled a turning point when he filmed an overnight camp with his German shepherd Scout. Showing the whole experience attracted more viewers than his earlier tutorials and encouraged him to make more trip films. His channel now ranges from shelter-building overnighters to extended canoe journeys, with successes and mistakes left in.

Beyond YouTube.

Joe appeared in the first season of HISTORY’s Alone in 2015. His longer films include Wilderness Solitude, a self-filmed ten-day trip in Northern Ontario. He also wrote the children’s book Scout Goes Camping, published in 2019, and the memoir Surviving Joe, published in 2025.

Returning to the woods.

A dirt bike accident in May 2024 caused a traumatic brain injury and damage to Joe’s left hand. In a September 2025 interview with SooToday, he described rebuilding his strength and returning to wilderness trips. The documentary Nerves, directed by Adam Pedersen, follows that return.
