Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Atlanta and raised in Houston, Kelly joined Girl’s Tyme in the early 1990s with Beyoncé and other young singers. The group competed on Star Search before evolving into Destiny’s Child.
The breakthrough.
Destiny’s Child released their self-titled debut in 1998, followed by The Writing’s on the Wall in 1999. Songs including “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name” helped bring the group to a much wider audience.
Finding her own sound.
Kelly released her first solo album, Simply Deep, in 2002. Her duet with Nelly, “Dilemma,” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy. Later collaborations took her into dance music with David Guetta, while “Motivation” with Lil Wayne became a signature solo R&B song.
Sharing the experience.
Alongside music, Kelly has acted in films and helped other singers develop. Her television work includes The X Factor in the UK and US, The Voice Australia, Building the Band and The Voice UK.
