Mini bio
How it started.
Growing up on Long Island, Mariah found comfort in singing and listened to her mother, a trained opera singer, practice at home. She made demos with Ben Margulies, worked several jobs and sang backup for Brenda K. Starr. Starr brought her to an industry party where her demo reached Columbia executive Tommy Mottola, leading to a record deal.
The breakout.
Her self-titled debut arrived in June 1990. It spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced four Hot 100 No. 1 singles, including “Vision of Love.” In 1991, she won Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.
Songs that stay with fans.
Mariah co-wrote and co-produced “All I Want for Christmas Is You” with Walter Afanasieff for her 1994 holiday album. The Emancipation of Mimi followed in 2005, with “We Belong Together” spending 14 weeks atop the Hot 100. That album won Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 2006 Grammys.
Her story, in her words.
In 2020, she published The Meaning of Mariah Carey with Michaela Angela Davis, sharing memories of childhood, music and survival. Her work outside the studio includes founding Camp Mariah with the Fresh Air Fund so children can explore future careers. In 2025, she released Here For It All, her first album since Caution.
