Mini bio

How it started.

Alicia grew up in Manhattan and began piano lessons at seven. She graduated from performing arts school at sixteen, then briefly attended Columbia University before choosing music full time.

The breakthrough.

In 2001, “Fallin’” became her first No. 1 hit and Songs in A Minor topped the Billboard 200. At the 2002 Grammys, she won five awards, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year. The Diary of Alicia Keys followed in 2003, with “You Don’t Know My Name” and “If I Ain’t Got You.”

More ways to tell her story.

Her work extends beyond records. More Myself, written with Michelle Burford, follows her search for a voice she could call her own. Hell’s Kitchen brings music and memories of her New York upbringing to the stage, with a book by Kristoffer Diaz. She also founded Keys Soulcare and co-founded the nonprofit Keep a Child Alive.
