Mini bio

How it started.

Growing up in Manhattan, Brian became fascinated with arithmetic after his father taught him the basics. Learning that mathematics could explain the physical world drew him toward physics. He graduated from Harvard in 1984 and earned his Oxford doctorate in 1987 as a Rhodes Scholar.

From research to readers.

His research in superstring theory includes co-discoveries of mirror symmetry and spatial topology change. His first popular science book, The Elegant Universe, brought that curiosity to a wider audience and became a Pulitzer finalist in 2000. He later hosted the NOVA adaptation and a second series based on The Fabric of the Cosmos.

A place for big questions.

Brian and producer Tracy Day co-founded the World Science Festival in 2008. Its live and digital programs bring scientists into conversation with audiences. Alongside his work as a Columbia professor of physics and mathematics, he writes books and performs theatrical science pieces, including Light Falls, about Einstein’s discoveries.
