Mini bio
How it started.
Philipp Dettmer founded Kurzgesagt in 2013. Its first video, about evolution, began as a university project. The idea was to make science inviting enough that viewers would want to keep learning. A fracking explainer became its first viral video.
The people behind the pictures.
The studio combines research, scripts, illustration and animation. It consults experts and publishes source sheets for its videos. Steve Taylor supplies the English narration, while Epic Mountain composes a soundtrack for each film.
Beyond the channel.
The team’s work has grown into science-inspired posters, journals, apps and games. Founder Philipp Dettmer wrote Immune, published in 2021. In 2025, Kurzgesagt and Toukana Interactive released Star Birds in Early Access, followed by the introduction of the history channel Nightshift in January 2026.
