How it started.
Hank was building websites in the 1990s, including a Mars exploration page. EcoGeek, his environmental technology blog, later became his job. He studied biochemistry at Eckerd College and earned a master’s degree in environmental studies at the University of Montana.
Finding his people.
In 2007, Hank and his brother John started Brotherhood 2.0, exchanging public video blogs instead of written messages. It grew into Vlogbrothers and the Nerdfighteria community. Hank’s song Accio Deathly Hallows reached YouTube’s front page that summer, bringing new viewers into their conversation.
Making room for curiosity.
The brothers built Complexly around educational video, including SciShow and Crash Course, which began in 2012. Hank also became a novelist: An Absolutely Remarkable Thing arrived in 2018 and became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller, followed by A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor in 2020. Both explore fame, technology, and life online.
Still making things.
Hank turned his experience of cancer treatment into the stand-up special Pissing Out Cancer. His newer projects include the reverse talk show Ask Hank Anything, the focus app Focus Friend with Honey B Games, and the conversation podcast Humans. Alongside the shows, he and John run charitable projects including Project for Awesome and Good.Store, whose profits go to charity.
