How it started.
Farida Khanum trained with Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan in the Patiala tradition. In a 2010 interview, she remembered her sister, singer Mukhtar Begum, taking her to lessons in Amritsar when she was seven. She gave her first public performance in 1950, then joined Radio Pakistan.
Finding her voice.
Her love of poetry helped draw her towards semi-classical singing. An invitation to perform for President Ayub Khan in the 1960s widened her recognition. “Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo” became the song most closely associated with her.
A new generation listening.
In 2015 she performed her signature song on Coke Studio Season 8. Her catalogue continues to reach listeners through streaming collections, including a Radio Pakistan Hits series released across December 2025 and January 2026.
