Mini bio

How it started.

Near the end of his Stanford studies, Grant turned a Python visualization project into an animated math lesson. He kept improving the code and making videos. A one-year Khan Academy fellowship helped him see how far online teaching could reach.

A turning point.

Grant identifies the linear algebra series as a turning point: applying his visual approach to course material showed him that the channel could become a learning resource. Calculus, neural networks, Fourier transforms and playful investigations such as Wordle followed.

Beyond the channel.

Since the end of 2016, 3Blue1Brown and its related projects have been his main focus. He also lectured for MIT’s 2020 Introduction to Computational Thinking course and wrote for Quanta Magazine. In 2023, he received the JPBM Communications Award.

Trivia

  1. The name 3Blue1Brown refers to his right eye, which is roughly three-quarters blue and one-quarter brown because of sectoral heterochromia.
  2. He wrote the piano pieces used in the Linear Algebra and Calculus series.
  3. Manim began as code for his own animations. He recommends the separately maintained Community Edition to newcomers.
