Mini bio

How it started.

James Vincent McMorrow is a singer, songwriter and producer from Dublin. In a 2010 RTÉ interview, James recalled taking up drums to join friends in a band, then gradually teaching himself other instruments. After an earlier studio attempt failed to click, James moved into a house outside Dublin and spent six months experimenting with the songs that became Early in the Morning.

The record that travelled.

Self-released in Ireland in 2010, Early in the Morning introduced songs including “If I Had a Boat” and “We Don’t Eat.” The album reached the Choice Music Prize shortlist for 2010 and received a US release in 2011. In 2025, James returned to the record for a 15th anniversary tour, playing it in full with just a guitar.

Following the sound.

Post Tropical followed in 2014, recorded in a remote studio near El Paso, Texas. We Move arrived in 2016 and debuted at number one in Ireland. James’s voice also found its way into Drake’s “Hype,” Kygo’s “I’m in Love” and the Game of Thrones season six trailer, which used the cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.”

Making room for new songs.

The seventh studio album, Wide open, horses, arrived in June 2024. James followed it with singles including “Rent California” and “Cowboys of Los,” and joined Wild Rivers on “Backfire (Better with James).” In September 2026, the return to Connolly’s of Leap offered a place to revisit older songs and try new material.
