How it started.
John grew up playing several sports. In his MusclePharm athlete interview, he named football, basketball and track and field, and described continuing from college football to the Canadian Football League’s Ottawa RedBlacks.
Finding his direction.
On his coaching site, John describes feeling lost when competitive sport ended. Fitness helped him through that transition and shaped his Gains Mentality: choosing something each day that helps you improve, even when much of life is outside your control.
From training to the screen.
By 2019, John was leading the circuit workout in Zac Efron’s Gym Time episode with Jasmine Tookes, Sara Sampaio, Josephine Skriver and Kelsey Merritt. His own coaching includes home and gym workouts through Gains By Gaines and recorded Gains Camp classes on Playbook.
Life beyond the gym.
Fans also follow his life as Hazel’s dad. In his 2025 Quintessential Gentleman interview, John described school runs and morning affirmations, and spoke about bringing the consistency he teaches in the gym into family life. His creator work also includes men’s style, as described in his Shine Talent Group profile.
