Mini bio
How it started.
Johnny grew up in Kilkeel in a family supported by their mum. After studying international economics in England, they worked at American summer camps and taught English in Thailand and South Korea to keep travelling. A sales job in Sydney brought the next turning point: starting OneStep4Ward around 2010.
The journey that brought people along.
The blog became a way to fund life on the road. In March 2017, Johnny finished visiting 197 countries, choosing Norway so friends and family could join the celebration. Their own account puts the journey at 11 years, with practical advice about money, visas and travelling independently woven into the story.
Beyond the country list.
Mountains and endurance challenges became the next focus. Johnny climbed Everest in 2023 and finished the Seven Summits on Mount Vinson in January 2024. Today, fans can join the adventures themselves, including the Eye of the Sahara Ultramarathon in Mauritania and Highway to Hell Ultracycle in Turkmenistan.
Sharing the experience.
Johnny co-founded Mudita Adventures in 2015, pairing trips with community projects. They also host TRT World’s Where to Next, exploring Türkiye through food, places and people. Family adventures run through the work too: the short film What Age Were You Born? follows a Mount Fuji challenge with their mum, Maura, to raise money for Parkinson’s research.
