Mini bio

How it started.

Les grew up in Toronto and spent weekends at a family cottage in Muskoka. Music took over during his teens, but at 25 he turned back toward the outdoors. A survival course at Humber College led him into wilderness guiding and teaching.

The Survivorman idea.

In 2001, he made self-filmed wilderness survival specials for Discovery Canada. Those pilots led to Survivorman in 2004, with Les operating the cameras while trying to keep himself alive. He also created the show’s theme music.

Beyond survival.

He brings the same curiosity to Wild Harvest, foraging ingredients for chef Paul Rogalski, and to books for younger explorers such as Wild Outside. His music is another route into the natural world, with Mother Earth featuring guests including Slash and Steve Vai.
