Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Hawaii and raised in Cincinnati, Mark was studying engineering when he began making YouTube videos in 2012. He told Forbes that recovering from a health crisis made him want a creative outlet he could control. He started by watching other gaming creators and learning how to make the format his own.
Finding his people.
Horror games became a home for his loud reactions and commentary, from Amnesia to Five Nights at Freddy’s. In an early Cancer Research Institute interview, he said he initially hoped the daily recordings would help him practice for voice acting. Fans responded, and he committed to making videos.
Letting viewers choose.
With A Heist with Markiplier in 2019 and In Space with Markiplier in 2022, he turned his channel into a place for branching adventures where viewers choose the next step. His work also moved into audio: he stars in and produces The Edge of Sleep, and co-hosts Distractible with friends Bob Muyskens and Wade Barnes.
Building something together.
Charity livestreams have been part of his work since 2012. The Cancer Research Institute honored his fundraising in 2020. That relationship with viewers also helped take Iron Lung to theaters in 2026: in his YouTube interview, Mark described fans calling cinemas to request the film he financed, directed and starred in.
