Mini bio
How it started.
Massive Attack grew out of Bristol’s Wild Bunch sound system in the late 1980s. Robert Del Naja, Grant Marshall and Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles came from that shared DJ and MC culture. Neneh Cherry and producer Cameron McVey encouraged their move into recording, and early work on Blue Lines took shape in a spare room at Cherry’s home.
Finding their sound.
Their 1991 debut Blue Lines brought together hip-hop rhythms, dub bass and soul voices, including Shara Nelson and Horace Andy. Unfinished Sympathy became one of their defining songs. Protection followed in 1994, with Tracey Thorn singing its title track; Mezzanine took them into darker territory in 1998, with Elizabeth Fraser singing Teardrop.
A changing circle of collaborators.
Guest voices remain central to their music. Heligoland brought in Hope Sandoval and Tunde Adebimpe, while their wider catalogue includes work with Tricky, Damon Albarn and Young Fathers. In 2026, Boots on the Ground paired them with Tom Waits and a film made with photographer thefinaleye.
Beyond the records.
Their live work connects music, images and activism. Robert Del Naja has worked with United Visual Artists and filmmaker Adam Curtis on the show’s design. Through Act 1.5, the group has also worked with climate researchers to test practical ways to cut emissions from concerts, including their Bristol event and later shows in Liverpool and London.
