Mini bio
How it started.
Mat began blogging in 2008 while studying Fashion Promotion at the University of Central Lancashire. A suggestion to keep an online journal led him into a community of bloggers, and Buckets & Spades became a place to save images, practise writing and share an interest in menswear and design.
Finding an audience.
After university, he worked in PR and fashion events in Manchester, then in menswear e-commerce before going freelance. In his OPUMO interview, Mat described a gradual progression: years of blogging brought an audience to Instagram, where brands, shops and restaurants began taking an interest in his work.
A home for design.
Based in Blackpool, Mat connects clothes with the spaces and places around them. Renovating the home he shares with Hollie helped bring interiors into his work. His city guides grew from readers asking for recommendations, building on travel posts he had already been writing for years.
What to follow now.
The Big Salad brings together outfit diaries, interiors, independent shops and places to eat and drink. He also collaborates with It’s Nice That on its Things social series, exploring everyday design questions, and teamed up with Jordan Bunker to cover Copenhagen’s 3 Days of Design for Finnish Design Shop in 2026.
