Mini bio

A voice from church.

Born Morae Ruffin, Morray grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Singing started early: at four, Morray performed in church and later became a church choir lead singer. Before music paid the bills, jobs included construction, fast food and call centers.

Finding a personal sound.

Morray told iHeart that “Quicksand” came after their partner encouraged them to stop sounding like other artists and write about their own life. The song broke through in 2020 and drew praise from fellow North Carolina artists J. Cole and DaBaby.

Street Sermons and a bigger stage.

The debut mixtape Street Sermons arrived in April 2021. That year also brought a place in XXL’s Freshman class, a vocal appearance with J. Cole and 21 Savage on “m y . l i f e,” and touring with Cole. The collaboration earned Morray a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance in 2022.

Starting fresh.

In a February 2025 interview, Morray explained that disagreements over their career had slowed releases, while writing and recording continued. Long Story Short became a way to share those years with fans. Released through Morray Music / EMPIRE, the project was followed by more singles and collaborations, including “What If” with J. Cole in 2026.
