Mini bio
How it started.
Raised in Chitwan in Nepal’s flatlands, Purja first wanted to follow his father and brothers into the Gurkhas. He joined in 2003 and moved to the UK Special Boat Service in 2009. His interest in climbing began during leave in December 2012: after trekking to Everest Base Camp, he persuaded his guide to teach him to climb and reached Lobuche East, his first peak.
The project that reached the world.
He left military service in early 2019 to pursue Project Possible. With his Nepali climbing team, he completed the fourteen 8,000-metre peaks in six months and six days, a then-record time. The journey became 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, released in 2021. He appeared in the documentary and served as an executive producer; its footage brought fans into the expeditions and the team behind them.
Beyond the film.
His memoir Beyond Possible tells the story of his upbringing, military service and climbing campaign. In January 2021, he joined nine other Nepali climbers for K2’s first winter ascent. He later continued guiding through Elite Exped and supporting community and environmental work through the Nimsdai Foundation.
His final chapter.
His 2025 Hat-Trick Challenge sought three rounds of both the fourteen 8,000-metre peaks and the Seven Summits while raising funds for his foundation. He died in the Broad Peak avalanche on 30 July 2026. His team’s August tribute said the organisations he created would carry his mission forward.
