Mini bio
How it started.
Oneika grew up in Toronto with Jamaican roots. Before making travel media full time, they taught French and English literature, including at an international school in Hong Kong. A first blog in 2005 began as a way to keep friends and family up to date on travels.
Finding an audience.
By 2009, the blog had begun attracting readers. Sponsored stays followed in 2012, then a first paid collaboration in 2015. Oneika left teaching in 2016. The next year, a Travel Channel producer reached out, leading to hosting jobs on Big City, Little Budget and One Bag and You’re Out.
Stories with a wider view.
On Oneika the Traveller, practical advice sits alongside conversations about race, politics and privilege. Their work on NBC New York Live has highlighted BIPOC businesses and initiatives, and earned a New York Emmy in 2020. As host and co-producer of Marriott Bonvoy’s About the Journey, Oneika meets locals to explore the people and culture behind a destination.
