Mini bio
How it started.
Rahat grew up in Faisalabad in a family of qawwali musicians. His father was Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, and his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan trained him from the age of seven. Performing with Nusrat’s group gave him his grounding in devotional singing.
A voice in the movies.
Mann Ki Lagan from Paap marked his entry into Bollywood playback singing. Film songs including O Re Piya brought that voice to another audience, while his own recordings and Coke Studio collaborations kept qawwali and Sufi music at the heart of his work.
Across generations.
His recordings range from Zaroori Tha to Afreen Afreen with Momina Mustehsan. He also performs with his son Shahzaman Ali Khan. In 2019, the University of Oxford awarded him an honorary Doctor of Music degree.
