Mini bio

How it started.

Ry Cuming grew up on Australia’s New South Wales coast, drawn to surfing and music. Hearing Jeff Buckley’s Grace prompted songwriting at 16. Early recordings came out under the name Ry Cuming; after that chapter, time in Indonesia helped RY reconnect with making music on personal terms.

Finding RY X.

The name RY X grew from the way friends in Los Angeles and Berlin used an X to mark collaborations. “Berlin” became the breakthrough in 2013, introducing the spare arrangements and close, exposed vocals that would carry into Dawn in 2016 and Unfurl in 2019.

Room for collaboration.

Alongside solo work, RY makes music with Frank Wiedemann as Howling and with Adam Freeland and Steve Nalepa as The Acid. Those projects leave room for house, techno and other electronic sounds. The work also extends to orchestras and dance, including scores for Gothenburg Opera and Nederlands Dans Theater.

From Blood Moon to DUSK.

Blood Moon arrived in 2022, the same year RY contributed writing and production to Drake’s “Sticky”. A Cercle performance took the music into the dunes of Brazil’s Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. In 2026, “Holy Water” and “Lay” introduced DUSK, announced for early 2027.
