Mini bio
How it started.
Stefan grew up in the UK with history close at hand. He told TIME for Kids that visiting King John’s burial place in his hometown helped connect him with the past. His conversation with David Ian Howe traces undergraduate studies at Sheffield, time abroad in Europe, and a move to Portland, where he worked in IT at a credit union before YouTube became his job.
Finding his audience.
His channel became a home for archaeology, anthropology, and human evolution. By February 2021, A Life in Ruins was discussing its recent growth and his move into making videos full time. Fans also came to recognize the plastic spoon he uses to hold his microphone.
Following the evidence.
On his website, Stefan lays out his approach: draw on academic sources, share them with viewers, and distinguish personal opinions from evidence. His videos pair explanations of ancient finds with conversations and collaborations with researchers, including work on ancient proteins and prehistoric environments.
From videos to a book.
In April 2022, Neon Squid published Tales of Ancient Worlds: Adventures in Archaeology, illustrated by Sam Caldwell. Written for children, it introduces archaeological discoveries from submerged Egyptian remains to the terracotta army and an Ice Age structure made from mammoth bones.
