Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Stephen found a path into dance through his school theater program. He told Inside Dance that performing in The Wiz helped him recognize what dance could mean to him. He later studied dance at Southern Union State Community College and Chapman University.
The breakthrough.
In 2008, he finished second on season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance. In his Inside Dance interview, he remembered struggling to gain a foothold before that audition. The show opened doors to teaching, acting and hosting, and he returned as an All-Star and later a judge.
Beyond the competition.
He became The Ellen DeGeneres Show’s resident DJ and dancer in 2014, later adding co-executive producer to his role. His film work included the Step Up series and Magic Mike XXL. With Allison Holker, he also helped found CLI Studios to make dance classes more accessible online.
Family and legacy.
Stephen and Allison brought their partnership to Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings and shared dance videos online. Stephen died on December 13, 2022, aged 40. Their picture book Keep Dancing Through was published in January 2024, carrying the family’s love of movement into a story for children.
