Mini bio

Before the solo songs.

Brian Fennell grew up around Seattle, studied piano and became the singer and pianist in indie band Barcelona. He later taught himself production, programming and guitar. The SYML name means “simple” in Welsh, a connection to the heritage of his birth parents. His wife found the word while looking through a Welsh dictionary.

The song that opened the door.

Fennell initially wrote “Where’s My Love” with film and television in mind. Its placement in Teen Wolf brought new listeners and requests for more music. What began as a small solo project grew into a touring career, followed by his self-titled debut album in 2019.

Room for grief and connection.

The Day My Father Died arrived in 2023, following the death of his adoptive father in 2021. Recorded with producer Phil Ek, it features Guy Garvey, Lucius, Sara Watkins and Charlotte Lawrence. That same year, Lana Del Rey sampled his piano piece “I Wanted to Leave” on “Paris, Texas.”

Building a home for the music.

In 2024, Fennell launched FIN. Recordings with Nettwerk Music Group and Good Harbor Music. He followed with Nobody Lives Here in 2025, made with Brian Eichelberger, and Paris Unplugged, a live album and concert film. His 2026 releases include a bilingual duet with Carla Morrison, the piano EP The Morning After a Death and the single “I Was Stone.”
