Mini bio
How it started.
Maxim began by filming simple chemistry experiments, including crystals grown from copper sulfate and reactions involving potassium permanganate and glycerin. His publisher describes the aim: Russian narration that made each experiment clear, visually engaging and easy to follow.
Finding an audience.
He launched the Russian-language Thoisoi channel in 2011 and added an English-language channel in 2014. In his Easyfind interview, he recalled buying a camera for a hobby, noticing viewers’ interest and working toward regular uploads. Those experiments grew into channels followed by millions.
From screen to page.
His books carry the same interest in visible transformations into print. AST published his volume on metals and their compounds, followed by books about crystals, gases and solutions, pairing experiments with photographs, formulas and explanations.
Science through the lens.
His work also reaches scientific image competitions. A freezing water drop won the non-photographic media category of Wiki Science Competition 2017. His Wilson cloud chamber video won the same category in 2021, showing particle tracks that make otherwise invisible radiation visible.

In his winner’s commentary, he described the liquid nitrogen experiments that led to his freezing water drop video.
Trivia
- He judges explanations by whether his mother, a Russian literature teacher, can understand them.
- He competed in chemistry Olympiads while at school.
- His winning freezing water drop video was filmed with a 90 mm macro lens and side lighting.
- His cloud chamber project used an ordinary kitchen pan and a small glass fish bowl.
