Mini bio
How it started.
Vi’s route into mathematics ran through music and art. In their own history of The Art of Research, they describe earning a music degree, briefly working as a professional composer and first publishing videos of art music performances. Papers and talks combining mathematics and music eventually led to the title “mathemusician.”
The notebook that found an audience.
Doodling in Math Class went viral and led to a New York Times profile. Vi later made videos with support from Khan Academy, including Twelve Tones, which brings together music, mathematics and philosophy.
Beyond the notebook.
Vi’s work also includes virtual reality research with eleVR and Parable of the Polygons, an interactive collaboration with Nicky Case about how small individual biases can produce segregation. The 2018 JPBM Communications Award recognized Vi’s mathematics and music videos.
