Mini bio

How it started.

Alex grew up in Sacramento. His parents introduced him to a climbing gym, and years of indoor climbing eventually gave way to a life spent climbing outdoors. In a 2008 Alpinist interview, he credited childhood reading about Peter Croft, John Bachar and the Stone Masters with shaping his interest in soloing.

The climbs that changed things.

His 2008 free solo of Moonlight Buttress helped bring him to the climbing world’s attention. On June 3, 2017, he became the first person to free solo El Capitan. Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi documented the preparation and ascent in Free Solo, which won the 2019 Academy Award for documentary feature.

Stories beyond the summit.

Alex co-wrote Alone on the Wall with David Roberts and co-hosts Climbing Gold with Fitz Cahall. His work also includes the environmental interview podcast Planet Visionaries and the Nevada travel series Get a Little Out There with Alex Honnold.

A practical way to give back.

He founded the Honnold Foundation in 2012 while living in a van and traveling to climb. The foundation supports community solar projects, connecting environmental work with reliable energy access. Alex now lives in Las Vegas with his wife Sanni and their daughters June and Alice.
