Mini bio

Before the channel.

Angela comes from Eastern Kentucky. She earned a physics and mathematics bachelor’s degree at Morehead State University in 2012, then a physics master’s in 2017 and PhD in 2019 at the University of Kentucky. Her research uses computer simulations to study galaxies, stellar bars, and dark matter.

How it started.

An early public upload, “First generation graduate students,” appeared in August 2021. Aimed at professors and research supervisors, it offered five ways to help first-generation students succeed. Academia remained a recurring subject, including her 2023 essay “the adjunct problem.”

Finding an audience.

Her April 2023 essay on string theory and science communication reached beyond her existing audience: Peter Woit recommended it on his Not Even Wrong blog that month. By September, Simon Clark and Sophie Ward were interviewing her for How To Make A Science Video about her growing channel and approach to explaining science.

What fans come back for.

Her channel moves between physics explanations, criticism of scientific hype, and the people and institutions behind research. There is room for longer investigations, such as her Richard Feynman essay, and practical curiosity, such as building a backyard radio telescope. Recent videos also bring in films, knitting, and the tools scientists use.
