Mini bio
How it started.
Arif grew up in a Punjabi musical family and learned from his father, Alam Lohar. His official history places his childhood in Achh, near Lalamusa. Singing and the chimta, a tong-shaped percussion instrument, became the foundations of his own performances.
Finding a wider audience.
The 2006 album 21st Century Jugni paired his voice with producer Mukhtar Sahota’s contemporary arrangements. His 2010 Coke Studio performance of “Alif Allah (Jugni)” with Meesha Shafi introduced him to a new generation. He later told the Times of India that it had brought younger listeners to his music.
The family sound continues.
His work now spans Punjabi folk, Sufi music and screen soundtracks, with collaborations including “Aa” and “Khaada Aye.” He also shares live bills with his sons, the Lohar Boys, keeping the family’s music on stage across generations.
