Mini bio

How it started.

Brian grew up in Oldham and first worked as a musician, playing keyboards in Dare and later D:Ream. He studied physics at Manchester, graduating in 1995 and completing a particle physics PhD in 1998.

From experiments to television.

His research career took him to particle accelerators in Germany, the United States and CERN. He became a professor at Manchester in 2009. Wonders of the Solar System, broadcast in 2010, was his first major BBC series, followed by Wonders of the Universe, Human Universe and The Planets.

Where fans find him.

His work connects physics with the questions people ask about their place in the universe. Fans can explore those ideas through documentaries, books co-written with Jeff Forshaw, The Infinite Monkey Cage and his live shows. Emergence carries that conversation into cosmology, biology, philosophy and history.
