Mini bio

How it started.

Chris decided to become an astronaut at nine, watching the Apollo Moon landing with his family on Stag Island, Ontario. He became a fighter pilot and test pilot before Canada selected him as an astronaut in 1992.

Sharing the view.

He flew on STS-74 in 1995 and STS-100 in 2001, when he became the first Canadian to walk in space. In 2013 he became the first Canadian commander of the International Space Station. His videos brought everyday life in orbit to people on Earth, including a rendition of David Bowie’s Space Oddity filmed aboard the station.

A life beyond orbit.

After retiring from the Canadian Space Agency in 2013, Chris continued sharing his experience through books, talks and music. His work ranges from the memoir An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth and the picture book The Darkest Dark to Cold War thrillers. He released the album Space Sessions: Songs From a Tin Can in 2015 and hosts Chris Hadfield On Energy.
