Mini bio
Hawaii roots.
Sugai grew up on Oahu’s North Shore and studied biology with an art minor at the University of Hawaii. He earned his medical degree there before completing dermatology residency at Harvard in 2016.
Finding his field.
He initially considered plastic surgery. Dermatology won him over because it combined visual diagnosis, procedures, cosmetics and the detective work of figuring out a skin condition.
From clinic to camera.
His medical assistant downloaded Instagram onto his phone in February 2020. As the pandemic disrupted in-person care, he began sharing skin education online. Christian Franz helped build and curate his YouTube channel in April 2020.
Reaching more people.
Product reviews, explanations and answers to skincare questions helped him build an audience across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. By September 2024, the University of Hawaii reported that he had more than two million followers. He has also brought his advice to The Drew Barrymore Show.
Teaching the next voices.
Through Sugai Academy, he now helps other healthcare professionals create credible educational content. His own videos continue to cover everyday routines, ingredient questions and product choices.
