Mini bio
Out of Vallejo.
Earl Stevens built an audience close to home before reaching listeners nationwide. With sister Suga-T, brother D-Shot and cousin B-Legit, E-40 formed the family group The Click. Selling tapes out of a car trunk and building Sick Wid It Records put independence at the center of the story.
A language of their own.
The 1995 album In a Major Way brought E-40 a national audience, with Sprinkle Me featuring Suga-T among its defining tracks. The appeal was already there: an unpredictable flow, playful phrasing and slang that made the songs sound unmistakably like the Bay Area.
New generations keep finding the music.
In 2006, Tell Me When to Go with Keak da Sneak helped carry hyphy to a national audience. Choices (Yup), released in 2014, later found fresh listeners through TikTok. In 2025, NPR’s Tiny Desk brought that catalog together with a live band for an 11-song performance.
Beyond the solo records.
E-40 joined Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Too $hort in Mount Westmore, releasing Snoop Cube 40 $hort in 2022. Away from recording, Earl Stevens Selections and Goon With The Spoon extended the work into wine, spirits and food. Grambling State awarded E-40 an honorary Doctor of Music in 2023.
