How it started.
Emmy grew up in Maryland and moved to California in 2018. An interest in makeup began around 2012 or 2013. Because most tutorials featured people with eyebrows and eyelashes, Emmy developed techniques that worked with alopecia universalis, earned a cosmetology license during high school and later studied makeup for television and film in Los Angeles.
Finding an audience.
Emmy told Distractify that the first videos were made for a few girls with alopecia who wanted to know how to recreate the makeup. TikTok uploads began in 2018, and by October 2023 the account had almost 10 million followers. Today, tutorials sit alongside transformations, wigs and stories about confidence.
Beyond the makeup chair.
Emmy’s work extends from beauty and special effects makeup to a namesake Pashion footwear collection. As a founder and president of Beauty Beyond Barriers, Emmy also helps build community for people with autoimmune conditions and visible differences. The organization’s mission draws on the founders’ own experiences with alopecia.
