Mini bio
How it started.
Extra History grew out of Extra Credits, the educational video project founded by Daniel Floyd and James Portnow. Its first Punic Wars episode arrived on September 6, 2013, with Portnow writing, Floyd narrating, Allison Theus drawing and Carrie Floyd editing. Creative Assembly, the studio behind Total War: Rome II, funded that first Roman history series.
Fans brought it back.
In August 2014, the team announced that Extra History would return with a World War I miniseries. Their Patreon appeal credited the audience’s enthusiasm for the original series. In 2015, Khan Academy named Portnow, identified as an Extra History video creator, one of its ten Talent Search winners.
Stories across the world.
The channel’s history stories range from the end of Japan’s samurai era to the spread of coffee. Extra Mythology retells traditional stories, while So You Haven’t Read introduces works of literature. The team also publishes follow-ups about mistakes and details that did not fit into the main episodes.
The team today.
Studio director Geoffry Zatkin and showrunner Matthew Krol joined in 2018. Krol narrates the history episodes; recent releases credit writers, artists, researchers and editors individually. Fans can suggest and vote on future topics through Patreon, and watch ad-free releases on Nebula.
