Mini bio

How it started.

Stuart and Ian Webster grew up in Lisburn. In their 2025 Belfast Live interview, Ian recalled Stuart teaching himself animation and making a World War I video in 2016. Ian shared it with friends and on Reddit, helping it find its first audience.

The breakthrough.

The brothers said they moved into OverSimplified full time after the World War II video in 2018. Stuart’s interest in history included childhood visits to Normandy’s battlefields and studying history at A-level.

History with a sense of humour.

The channel builds animated stories around wars, revolutions and historical figures. Its first WW1 video credits Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History as an inspiration and Bill Wurtz as a reason to make it. Later work includes The Napoleonic Wars and the three-part Second Punic War series.

A fan-voted award.

In 2025, OverSimplified won the Webby People’s Voice Award for Science & Education in Series & Channels. The channel had also received a Best Writing honoree recognition in 2023.
