How it started.
He began learning from his father at five; Coke Studio’s 2011 “Kangna” introduced him to a wider audience.
A family sound.
Fareed leads the ensemble with his younger brother Abu Muhammad. Their sons also perform with them, carrying the family’s qawwali training onto the stage. Their repertoire extends to classical forms including tarana, thumri and khayal.
For listeners everywhere.
His recordings connect concert audiences with fans listening online. On Coke Studio’s “Piya Ghar Aaya,” he introduces the devotional meaning of Bulleh Shah’s poetry before the ensemble sings. The group’s music also features in the opening sequence of Mira Nair’s film The Reluctant Fundamentalist.
