Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Vancouver and raised in northern California, Gabriel grew up hearing about his parents’ backpacking trip around Europe. He began hitchhiking home along the road near Willits as a child. In 1990, he saved money working at an ice cream parlor and selling a computer and his baseball cards, then flew to London the day after turning eighteen.
From journeys to books.
That first summer abroad became part of Following My Thumb, his memoir of travels from 1990 to 2000. Published in 2012, it follows adventures in Europe, the United States and India. His other travel book, Gabe’s Guide to Budget Travel, brings together practical preparations and favorite destinations.
Building a life on video.
Gabriel told The Professional Hobo that it took about four years after learning to edit videos before he could make a living as a vlogger. His channel now pairs journeys and personal stories with practical travel information. In October 2026, he documented his ninety-ninth country and returned to India for an eighteenth visit.
