Mini bio

How it started.

Garrett grew up in Parsippany, New Jersey, where he credits his physics teacher and wrestling coach with helping him build a love of science and the discipline to pursue it. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania before earning his doctorate at Caltech in 1997.

From engineering to orbit.

NASA selected him as an astronaut in 1998. In 2008, Endeavour carried him to the International Space Station for a 95-day stay, and Discovery brought him home. He returned to space aboard Atlantis in 2010. Across those missions he performed three spacewalks.

Sharing the experience.

After NASA, Garrett joined SpaceX in 2011 and later served as its director of space operations. He became a USC astronautical engineering professor in 2018 and now also advises Vast. Fans can hear a more playful side of that experience on 2 Funny Astronauts, the podcast he started with Mike Massimino in 2021.

A science-fiction fan behind the scenes.

A lunch with Ronald D. Moore helped start Garrett’s involvement in For All Mankind. He advises the alternate-history series on spaceflight and even played a version of himself in its second season. His screen consulting also includes Ad Astra.
