Mini bio
How it started.
Gary grew up in Austin, singing and playing music with three sisters at family gatherings. As a teenager, Gary performed at Antone’s, the blues club that later became a business partnership as well as a musical home.
The wider world heard.
A performance at Eric Clapton’s 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival helped carry Gary beyond Austin. The Bright Lights EP followed in 2011, then the major-label debut album Blak and Blu in 2012, home to “Bright Lights,” “When My Train Pulls In” and “Please Come Home.”
Room to grow.
The Story of Sonny Boy Slim arrived in 2015, followed by This Land in 2019. At the 2020 Grammys, This Land won Best Contemporary Blues Album, while its title track won Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.

Released March 22, 2024, JPEG RAW brings Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, Valerie June, Naala and Keyon Harrold into Gary’s musical world. Co-produced with longtime collaborator Jacob Sciba, the album draws on blues, soul, hip-hop, jazz and African music. Gary also played Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup in the 2022 film Elvis.
