Mini bio
How it started.
George grew up in Hertford and moved to Bristol to study songwriting at BIMM in 2011. A Columbia Records deal followed less than a year later. BBC Introducing supported his early music, and he played its Glastonbury stage in 2013 before the release of his debut EP, Did You Hear the Rain?
Finding his voice.
His deep baritone and love of folk and blues gave songs like “Budapest” a distinctive sound. His influences included Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly. For Wanted on Voyage, he travelled around Europe by train, taking notes and watching the people around him. The album became a UK No. 1.
Songs that stayed.
Staying at Tamara’s followed in 2018, with “Shotgun” becoming his first UK No. 1 single. He won the BRIT Award for British Male Solo Artist in 2019. Gold Rush Kid, written and produced in London with longtime collaborator Joel Pott, became his third consecutive UK No. 1 album in 2022. Its songs include “Anyone For You” and “Green Green Grass.”
A different kind of music home.
George built Hotel Québec in Hertford, initially as a personal studio. In his October 2025 newsletter, he described reaching a limit after years of writing, recording, promoting and touring. Sharing the space with other musicians brought him enjoyment, and he began promoting it more widely in January 2025. His recent newsletters follow the sessions, artists and everyday work behind its doors.
