Mini bio

How it started.

IDLES formed in Bristol in 2009. Their early songs leaned toward indie pop, and years of small gigs helped them find a tougher sound. BRUTALISM arrived in 2017 after that long apprenticeship, pairing blunt guitars with Joe Talbot’s vulnerable, political lyrics.

Finding their people.

Joy as an Act of Resistance. followed in 2018, bringing songs about masculinity, immigration and inequality into the same room as hope and solidarity. It won the 2019 Ivor Novello Award for Best Album. Ultra Mono and CRAWLER followed in 2020 and 2021.

More ways to connect.

For 2024’s TANGK, the band worked with producers Nigel Godrich, Kenny Beats and guitarist Mark Bowen, while Talbot explored love through a softer singing voice. In 2025 they moved into film with Caught Stealing, contributing original songs and performing a score composed by Rob Simonsen.

Quotes

I found my voice again. I can be vulnerable. I can be in love. I can be soft.Joe Talbot, Rolling Stone UK

Discussing the singing and emotional openness of TANGK in a January 2024 interview.

Trivia

  1. TANGK is pronounced “tank” with a hint of the “g”; its name began as an imitation of the guitar sound the band imagined.
  2. Talbot had only finished the lyrics to Grace before the TANGK recording sessions, leaving much of the rest to emerge in the vocal booth.
  3. Darren Aronofsky personally asked the band to help bring the sound of Caught Stealing to life.
