Mini bio

How it started.

J Hus grew up in Stratford, East London. After sharing tracks on SoundCloud in late 2014, they turned to freestyle videos to reach beyond the neighbourhood. Black Box and Link Up TV quickly took an interest, and the 2015 mixtape The 15th Day helped build an audience around songs such as “Dem Boy Paigon”.

Finding a sound.

Their music helped establish Afroswing, blending rap with dancehall, R&B and African influences. The debut studio album Common Sense arrived in 2017, with long-term collaborator JAE5 central to its production. “Did You See” became a signature song and won Best Song at that year’s MOBO Awards; the album also earned a Mercury Prize nomination.

The albums that followed.

Big Conspiracy became J Hus’s first UK No. 1 album in 2020. The BRIT Awards named them Male Solo Artist in 2021. Beautiful and Brutal Yard followed in 2023, including the Drake collaboration “Who Told You”. Recent releases include “Gold” with Asake, Half Clip and the double release “Moonlight / Clean Run”.

Trivia

  1. “Bouff Daddy” began as a nickname from friends. J Hus explained to i-D that “bouff” means money in their area.
  2. The car-switching story behind “Did You See” came from an actual trip to a neighbourhood barbecue, according to J Hus’s i-D track-by-track interview.
  3. J Hus told The FADER that the “ugly” persona turned a nickname from friends and family into something they could claim for themselves.
