Mini bio
A scientist first.
Raised in Caribou, Maine, Jessica studied biology at Brown, space studies at the International Space University and marine biology at Scripps. Her research explored how emperor penguins and elephant seals manage oxygen during deep dives. She later studied bar-headed geese and joined Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital as an assistant professor in 2012.
Trying again.
Jessica was not selected for NASA’s 2009 astronaut class and considered giving up on applying. She tried again and joined the 2013 class. In her 2024 Brown address, she spoke openly about impostor syndrome, the encouragement of mentors and learning to take chances.
Sharing the view.
On October 18, 2019, she and Christina Koch completed the first all-woman spacewalk, replacing a failed battery charge-discharge unit outside the International Space Station. She returned to orbit as Crew-12 spacecraft commander in 2026. Alongside mission work, she shares practical glimpses of living in microgravity, including a video about caring for curly hair in space.
