Mini bio
Fiction came first.
John was publishing science fiction before his two-channel science career took shape. The Salvagers and its prequel Rescue at Io appeared in 2013, followed by Supermind in 2017. His fiction and videos share an interest in how life, technology and intelligence might develop beyond the world we know.
Space, one question at a time.
On his namesake YouTube channel, John makes focused documentary-style videos about science, future technology and mysteries of the universe. Astronomy and the search for extraterrestrial life recur throughout his work. In 2017, he collaborated with Isaac Arthur on Uplifting, exploring the possibility and ethics of increasing another species’ intelligence.
Making room for longer conversations.
In August 2018, John announced Event Horizon to give longer discussions a home alongside his short documentaries. The announcement responded to viewers asking for more in-depth content and outlined interviews with scientists, science fiction authors and other guests. By July 2019, the Space Junk podcast was interviewing him about reaching large audiences through both channels.
Still asking the big questions.
His 2026 uploads continue that mix of narrated explorations and guest conversations. Recent subjects include possible alien artifacts on the Moon, planetary history and self-replicating space probes, while Event Horizon has featured Daniel Whiteson and Janusz Petkowski.
