Mini bio

How it started.

JP grew up in Toronto with music in the family: their grandfather was cellist János Starker. At 14, JP had a weekly Sunday brunch gig at Statler’s piano bar, then spent years playing open mics around Greater Toronto. Micah Barnes became an early singing and songwriting mentor.

The song that traveled.

The 2018 single “The Few Things” helped lead to a headline tour and an Arista deal. Then came “If the World Was Ending,” co-written and sung with Julia Michaels and produced by FINNEAS. Released in 2019, it became JP’s breakout and earned a 2021 Grammy nomination for Song of the Year.

Building a body of work.

JP released Dangerous Levels of Introspection in 2021, with Maren Morris on “Line By Line” and John Mayer playing guitar on “Here’s Hopin’.” A Grey Area followed in 2023, including collaborations with Camilo, Lizzy McAlpine and Tiny Habits. Its opening epigraph adapts a poem by their friend Yesika Salgado.

Back at the piano.

After the paired 2025 releases Articulate Excuses and Make Yourself At Home, JP returned with Okay Piano Guy in October 2026. Their first independent full-length album puts piano at the center. JP describes songwriting as a way to make the complicated feelings of being a person easier to share.
