How it started.
Kat earned her epidemiology Ph.D. at the University of Illinois Chicago in 2013. In a Friends of Franz interview, she recalled starting social media content in 2020 to get information to friends and family. As people shared it, the audience grew.
Finding her audience.
She joined TikTok during the pandemic and found COVID-19 misinformation among the entertainment videos. Her explainers pushed back on those claims, bringing more viewers to her work. Today, her university describes an audience of more than half a million across social media.
Beyond the feed.
Her work combines teaching, research and public explanation. She has participated in the United Nations’ Team Halo and the World Health Organization’s Project FIDES, and writes about outbreaks and misinformation for outlets including STAT and The Conversation.
